A 15-year review of the PEPFAR support to Malawi: How Has it Succeeded?
By Maureen Luba, African Region Advocacy Advisor for AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC), Malawi and 2019 Jane Jie Sun Women in Global Health LEAD Fellow, Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.
Malawi was listed as one of the six locations that have made remarkable progress towards ending the AIDS epidemic in a recent product produced by AmfAR, AVAC, and Friends of the Global Fight. Being one of the poorest countries on the list, Malawi has proven that ending the epidemic is possible anywhere. In this post, Maureen explores the factors that have contributed to this success as well as challenges to continued progress. One signifigcant factor that Maureen points out is the nearly $700 million invested in Malawi since 2003 by PEPFAR – the largest global health program focused on a single disease in history. Please join Maureen and the Harvard Global Health Institute on October 7th for a one-day symposium to explore what enabled the creation and continuation of PEPFAR and to showcase how PEPFAR has transformed not just the worldwide HIV/AIDS response but global health delivery more broadly.
