Internship Location
Bethesda, MD, USA
Organization
The Fogarty International Center supports and conducts research on important global health issues. The Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies, where the internship is based, focuses on computational modeling of infectious diseases, particularly respiratory viruses with epidemic and pandemic potential.
Position Overview
The purpose of the internship is to gain experience in statistical analysis and mathematical modeling of infectious diseases, working with epidemiological datasets.
Project Details
Analyze spatial and temporal dynamics of influenza in the US in the post-COVID-19 period using a large hospitalization database.
Investigate questions such as the resurgence of influenza post-pandemic, synchronization of epidemics across locations, and predictive value of national or state-level epidemics for local dynamics.
Intern Responsibilities
Download publicly available epidemiological datasets.
Code statistical and mathematical analyses in R (building on existing lab code where applicable).
Summarize and interpret results.
Present findings to the lab at the end of the internship.
Optionally, work towards a publication with supervisor approval.
Qualifications
Strong analytical skills, ideally from computer science, applied math, physics, or other quantitative backgrounds.
Previous experience with data analysis is a plus.
Learning Outcomes
Gain experience in statistical data analysis.
Conduct a full research project from start to finish.
Prepare and present scientific findings.
Potential contribution to a publication.
Nature of Internship
Research (computational epidemiology / data analysis)
Work Environment
Fully in-person with opportunities to collaborate with other students and lab members.
Additional Onboarding for Selected Intern(s)
Interns will be introduced to lab resources and datasets and guided by their supervisor in the research workflow.
