POSITION 1: Youth-Friendly Primary Health Care & Mental Health Intern (Vietnam)

Position Overview

The intern will support PATH’s project team in advancing youth-friendly primary health care initiatives in Vietnam, with a primary focus on mental health. Working closely with multidisciplinary project staff, the intern will contribute to mental health–related activities and may also support additional project components based on interests and skills. This role offers hands-on experience in applied global mental health within a real-world public health program.

Project Details

PATH is implementing a project in Ho Chi Minh City and a Mekong province aimed at improving access to quality, youth-friendly primary health care services. The project serves youth ages 18–35, including students, young workers, migrant workers, LGBT+ communities, young women, and youth from the general population. Services address mental health, sexual and reproductive health, noncommunicable disease (NCD) screening, and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Work with the project team on mental health screening forms under the guidance of a PATH mental health doctor

  • Support analysis of mental health screening results

  • Prepare and support presentation slides summarizing findings

  • Participate in project meetings and events

  • Join project site visits in Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong provinces, if interested (administrative procedures supported by PATH)

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a program in psychology, mental health, or a related field

  • Basic understanding of mental health concepts and screening tools

  • Ability to work with data, including reviewing screening results and conducting basic analysis using Excel or similar tools

  • Ability to prepare clear and well-organized presentation slides (PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar)

  • Willingness to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary project team

  • Collaborative, supportive, and proactive (“can-do”) attitude

Learning Outcomes

  • Hands-on experience supporting mental health screening in a public health project

  • Skills in analyzing and interpreting mental health screening data

  • Experience developing data summaries and presentation materials

Nature of Internship

International / Implementation Research

Work Environment

Hybrid. The intern will work in the office two days per week. Other project team members rotate in-office schedules, ensuring that a team member is always present to provide support and supervision.

POSITION 2: Malaria Diagnostics & Health Systems Strategy Intern (ADVANCE Project)

Position Overview

PATH is seeking an intern to support the ADVANCE project team in developing a strategy to expand the use of G6PD point-of-care (POC) tests beyond malaria indications in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The intern will also have opportunities to contribute to other malaria-related projects. This role provides hands-on experience in diagnostics strategy, infectious disease control, and health systems strengthening in Southeast Asia.

Project Details

PATH is implementing the ADVANCE project, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), in partnership with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) and the Burnet Institute. The project aims to advance high-quality diagnostic tools to ensure equitable access to optimal malaria treatment and accelerate malaria elimination in the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

The project includes three core workstreams:

  1. Research and development of diagnostic tools

  2. Clinical evaluation of diagnostic tools

  3. Availability and Access, focused on sustainable integration of diagnostics into national procurement, financing systems, and the broader diagnostic ecosystem

Diagnostics include G6PD point-of-care tests and next-generation malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).

Intern Responsibilities

  • Conduct landscape and desk research on non-malaria indications for G6PD POC tests in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia

  • Review national policies, clinical guidelines, and regulatory frameworks related to diagnostics and G6PD testing

  • Map key stakeholders involved in diagnostics adoption and scale-up

  • Support market and health system analyses, including demand forecasting, user segmentation, procurement, and financing pathways

  • Contribute to strategic frameworks and country-specific recommendations

  • Prepare briefing notes, slide decks, summaries, and draft strategy documents

  • Support other malaria-related projects, including research, monitoring and evaluation, or knowledge management

  • Participate in internal meetings and learning sessions on malaria elimination and diagnostics

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a program of study in public health, global health, medicine, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, health economics, international development, or a related field

  • Demonstrated interest in infectious diseases, diagnostics, malaria elimination, or health systems strengthening

  • Strong research and analytical skills, including literature reviews and data synthesis

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a hybrid or remote environment

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Learning Outcomes

  • Experience in global health strategy development related to diagnostics access

  • Strengthened research, analytical, and synthesis skills across multiple countries

  • Exposure to donor-funded, multi-country projects and international research partnerships
