Organization Description
The Global Enterics Laboratory conducts basic and translational research on infectious diseases of high clinical relevance, supported by NIH and CDC grants. The lab is deeply committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, providing mentorship opportunities to underrepresented groups in science and medicine, and engaging in international collaborations that enhance clinical and research capacity.
Internship Focus Areas
Research Topics
- B Cell Responses to Cholera and Enteric Infections
- Investigating how antibodies at mucosal surfaces interact with the innate immune system to protect against cholera and other enteric infections.
- Klebsiella Infection
- Conducting clinical and in vitro studies to examine human immune responses to antimicrobial-resistant Klebsiella species and how host responses affect the course of invasive infection.
The summer intern will choose a project related to one of these topics.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent reading and develop a foundational understanding of the project topic.
- Plan and execute experiments.
- Analyze results and present findings to the team.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop skills in independent reading and critical investigation of global health issues.
- Gain experience in planning and conducting scientific experiments.
- Build confidence in presenting scientific findings to a broader audience.
Qualifications
- Preferred: Basic laboratory experience (not required).
- Required: Strong interest in bacterial immunity or microbiology.
Work Environment
- The intern will work fully in-person, with access to a collaborative team including two PIs, a lab manager, a study nurse, and two research technicians/coordinators.
Onboarding Requirements
Interns must complete:
- Human subjects training.
- Institutionally required safety and occupational health trainings.
- IRB addition, if applicable to the chosen project.
