Internship Details

  • Format: Hybrid: A mix of virtual and in-person work, based at the historic 401 Park building in Fenway, Boston.
  • Work Environment Details:
    • Intern will have individual office space.
    • The IQIC team follows a hybrid schedule, typically working in-person biweekly.

Organization Description

The International Quality Improvement Collaborative (IQIC) for Congenital Heart Disease, launched in 2008, focuses on improving outcomes for congenital heart surgery in low- and middle-income countries. By providing benchmarking data and supporting quality improvement efforts, IQIC aims to reduce global congenital heart disease mortality.

Internship Project Descriptions
Selected intern will have the option to choose from the below positions.

Position 1: Quality Improvement and Partner Engagement

Intern will support IQIC’s annual quality improvement initiatives by engaging with international partners, conducting data audits, and creating educational resources.

  • Responsibilities:
    1. Prepare data and materials for annual audits.
    2. Schedule and conduct audit meetings with international partners.
    3. Document and report on audit results.
    4. Collaborate with IQIC nurse educators.
    5. Assist in the development of the IQIC quality improvement curriculum.
    6. Organize educational webinars.
  • Learning Outcomes:
    • Gain an understanding of global health quality improvement processes and data auditing principles.
    • Develop skills in project management, cross-cultural communication, and curriculum design for international healthcare settings.

Position 2: Database Design and Data Management

Intern will assist with designing and optimizing the IQIC database in REDCap, supporting global quality improvement and research efforts.

  • Responsibilities:
    1. Contribute to the design and development of the new IQIC database.
    2. Manage and validate IQIC database data to ensure quality.
    3. Update and develop documentation for global partners.
    4. Support the data manager with research tasks, including data analysis, as opportunities arise.
  • Learning Outcomes:
    • Acquire skills in database design and data management with a focus on healthcare research.
    • Learn best practices for improving data quality and supporting global quality improvement initiatives in low-resource settings.

Qualifications

For Both Projects:

  • Enrollment in Public Health, Global Health, Health Science, Nursing, Education, or Data Science (biotechnology) programs.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and cross-cultural sensitivity.

Position 1-Specific Qualifications:

  • Experience with data management and designing educational content.
  • Proficiency with virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom).
  • Strong time management and flexibility.

Position 2-Specific Qualifications:

  • Experience in database design, data validation, and familiarity with data collection workflows.
  • Knowledge of REDCap or similar research database platforms.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis (e.g., R or SAS preferred but not required).

Work Environment

Intern will collaborate with a hybrid team, engage in both independent and team-based tasks, and work closely with international healthcare partners.

Onboarding Requirements

Selected intern will:

  1. Be added to the IQIC Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  2. Complete CITI training.
  3. Obtain a Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) badge.
  4. Attend formal onboarding sessions.
