Internship Details
- Position Type: Fully In-Person
- Key Research Areas: Tuberculosis (TB), Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria
Organization Description
The Rubin Laboratory is dedicated to studying Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, one of the leading global health threats causing over a million deaths annually. The lab aims to develop new therapies for TB by understanding its biology and interactions with the host. Due to the hazardous nature of working with M. tuberculosis, undergraduate interns focus on non-pathogenic model organisms or related non-tuberculous mycobacteria to investigate the pathogen’s mechanisms and treatment approaches.
Past research projects have ranged from understanding molecular mechanisms of cell division to evaluating potential antibiotics.
Internship Responsibilities
The intern will work directly with a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, contributing to:
- Experimental Design: Assisting in the planning and design of experiments.
- Laboratory Work: Executing experiments using model organisms and related non-tuberculous mycobacteria.
- Data Analysis: Analyzing experimental results to draw conclusions.
- Collaborative Learning: Actively engaging with other lab members in a collaborative research environment.
Learning Outcomes
- Global Health Perspective: Understand the impact of tuberculosis on public health.
- Scientific Process: Gain practical knowledge of experimental design, execution, and data analysis.
- Technical Expertise: Learn laboratory assays and methods used in infectious disease research.
Preferred Qualifications
- Required:
- Background in biology.
- Interest in basic science and laboratory research.
- Preferred but not Required:
- Prior laboratory experience (including classroom-based lab work).
Work Environment
- Fully In-Person: All activities will take place in the lab on-site at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
- The lab fosters a dynamic and collaborative environment, with opportunities to interact with a team of graduate students, postdocs, research assistants, and scientists.
Key Dates and Additional Notes
- 10 weeks June – August
- Important Note: Undergraduate projects will not involve work with the pathogen M. tuberculosis.
