The University of Cape Town is an inclusive, research-intensive African university that addresses the challenges of our time with cutting-edge teaching, research and facilities. The Division of Global Surgery at the University of Cape Town offers unique opportunites for undergraduate and postgraduate students to engage with Global Surgery challenges and solutions in Africa. Established in 2019 and formally integrated into UCT’s Department of Surgery in 2020, the Division focuses on improving access to comprehensive, safe, and quality surgical care across Africa through research, capacity building, implementation, and advocacy. The elective program provides students with a hands-on experience of understanding and addressing surgical healthcare disparites in resource-limited settings. This program aligns with the Division’s vision of creating a world where everyone has access to comprehensive, safe, quality surgical care, with special emphasis on underserved populations and populations in crisis.

Projects include:

  • Impact of Global Surgery education and initiatives on previous participants
  • Conducting literature reviews Supporting proposal and manuscript writing Attending community workshops Attending Global Surgery lectures and events
  • Research Capacity building Innovation
Intern Positions Available: 2
Format: In-Person

Work Environment Details: Our Division is at the Groote Schuur Hospital. The interns will spend most days of the week at the office. We have an office called the ‘International office, which is a closed shared office with desks for up to 4 people. They can use our boardroom, and many other UCT facilities throughout their internship.
