Addressing the Global Challenges of Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea
-
Yonatan Grad, MD, PhD
Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the cause of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea, causes a high burden of disease and has become resistant to each of the first-line antibiotics used to treat it, including increasing resistance to ceftriaxone, the mainstay of treatment globally. With two new antibiotics recently approved for treatment, the increasing use of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis for bacterial sexually transmitted infections, and development of new diagnostics, we have new tools to deploy. But how best to do so remains unclear.
In this presentation, Professor Yonatan Grad will review recent advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gonorrhea, and discuss emerging frameworks for optimizing implementation and rollout strategies in diverse healthcare settings.
This webinar is free and open to the public and will include time for audience Q&A.

Yonatan is Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases and Director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The Grad lab focuses on how to prepare and respond effectively to infectious disease threats through understanding interacting processes from microbial evolution through human ecology. The lab uses interdisciplinary methods, including microbial genetics, population genomics, and mathematical modeling to move across these scales, with goals of advancing clinical and public health practices. He works with public health institutions locally, nationally, and internationally, including serving on WHO guideline committees for sexually transmitted infections.
