The Africa Health Research Institute: fighting HIV and TB at the centre of the dual epidemic

Prof Deenan Pillay is an academic clinical virologist with a research and clinical interest in HIV transmission, antiviral therapy and drug resistance. He was previously Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity at University College London (UCL). He was appointed as Director of the Africa Centre for Population Health in 2013, a Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programme based in South Africa, and is now Director of the Africa Health Research Institute, a WT and Howard Hughes Medical Institute funded research initiative in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, focusing on HIV and TB. He is seconded from UCL, where he remains Professor of Virology. He has held a number of senior scientific roles, including as Director of the UCL Biomedical Research Centre.
